Public speaking can feel intimidating whether you’re addressing a small group or a large crowd. I’ve been there. I remember the moment I learned I would be the keynote speaker for an audience of over 3,000 in Las Vegas. My heart started racing, my palms were sweaty, and I wondered if people would even want to hear what I had to say. Over time, I learned that preparation is the key to turning nerves into confidence and delivering presentations that truly connect. Whether you’re giving keynotes or speaking in smaller settings, stick around! These steps will help you better prepare and speak with impact.

Understand Your Audience and Purpose

Hosting my first podcast is where I really started to understand the importance of purpose in your words. EVERYTHING ABOUT YOUR AUDIENCE MATTERS! The size of the group matters, their background, interests, and what they hope to gain. For example, speaking to a group of industry professionals requires a different approach than addressing a community gathering.

Ask yourself:

  • What does this audience already know?

  • What do they want to learn or feel?

  • How formal or casual should the tone be?

Knowing this helps shape your message and choose examples that click. What people DON'T want to hear is a bunch of info they already know or a bunch of things they don't connect to. KNOW YOU'RE AUDIENCE.

Craft a Clear and Engaging Message

A strong presentation has a clear purpose and a simple structure. I start by defining the main thing I want the audience to remember. Then I build around.

Try this structure:

  • Introduction: Grab attention fast. This could be a statement or quick engaging story that ties into the presentation.

  • Body: Present 3 key points with examples.

  • Conclusion: Summarize and leave the audience with a call to action or thought to consider.

A good example of this is when I speak about public speaking itself. I start by sharing my own early struggles to connect emotionally and then talk about how I overcame them, teaching each strategy in my key points. Then I give a very clear next step to practice what we learned after the class. This makes the message more relatable and memorable.

Practice with Purpose

The tip I hear A LOT: Practice a million times in front of a mirror!

Listen, I'm all about prep, but you have to know yourself. First, I don't write a script and try to memorize it. Doing this will likely just make you more nervous every time you miss a word during practice. Focus on your key points and the big moments. Practice, yes! But know when practice goes from making you feel comfortable with the material, and when it turns to "I think I'm getting worse!" due to overly preparing the script and losing the authenticity.

Manage Nervous Energy

The truth is I've been speaking a long time and I still get nervous. I learned to channel that energy into enthusiasm rather than letting it freeze me. Deep breathing before stepping on stage helps calm my nerves.

I also remind myself that the audience wants me to succeed. They’re interested in what I have to say, not waiting for me to fail. This mindset shift makes a big difference.

Final Checklist Before Speaking

Before stepping up, I run through a quick checklist:

  • Do I know my key message, my purpose?

  • Have I practiced enough to feel confident?

  • Am I mentally prepared to engage and adapt if needed?

This routine centers me and sets the tone for a strong delivery and a successful presentation.
